LONG ISLAND CREEK SITE 6A

CONCLUSION

Long Island Creek Sites 6A and 6B are located in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Palisades unit. There are very few manmade structures and improvements in the immediate area of site 6A barring a small parking lot and several unpaved footpaths. This site is approximately 800 feet from the mouth of the creek as it flows into the Chattahoochee River and is upstream of site 6B.. The stream ran clear during the dry periods and slightly turbid the day following heavy rainfall as was expected. The bacterial water testing proved to contain a high count of coliforms and a correspondingly high concentration of E coli. from the sample tested the day after a heavy rain, with significantly lower counts the following weeks when no rainfall was recorded. In all samples, the water tested in the area of neutral pH and a consistent finding of dissolved Oxygen within range given the water temperature. Nitrate-nitrogen as well as phosphate testing showed near 0. The trees inventoried as representative of the riparian area of this stream segment showed a majority of Yellow Poplars with a mix of different species of oaks and an occasional maple which were mostly in a healthy condition with little danger of failure in the near future except several on the very edge of the bank whose roots were being exposed by soil erosion and undercutting.

Additional collection, testing and analysis of stream data for an extended period would be necessary for useful statistical analysis.
